Cricket & Brands!!


I am 15 days and 15 hrs late in posting this blog. If people have a good track on days, they will surely understand what I am referring to. Yes, it’s the world cup win that Indian team has given to us after 28 odd years.
Its a happiness which does not have any direct relevance to one’s personal life but it surely makes us proud. Cricket in India is not just a game but it’s a religion, not a lot of people will understand about the importance but in every lane, every ground, every region of India, we see people who get inspired everyday.  Its not a joke to have a TV TRP index close to 35, but it’s cricket (world cup finals) that made it possible.
In a county like India, everything is compared to this sport and its well known players, whether its politics or Sensex. The other day I was reading in newspaper which said, ‘Will Mr. X (some Politian) have a comeback as Yuvraj Singh after he got defeated in the state elections’. I also came across an article which compared the rise and fall of Sensex to the winning and loosing streak of Indian team. The shares of a particular company rose 20% after Sachin scored a century. That’s insane, isn’t it. There is no connection of a sport to a politician’s life or the share market but still we are compelled to draw such humors comparisons.
The companies which attach great importance to TV ads as one of their major marketing strategy, wait for such moments where they have the scope of reaching out to every household and educate them about their products and there relevance to cricketing players. Nowhere in the world we will find a sports person taking over a movie superstar in terms of Brand endorsements. But MS Dhoni, proved his point by crossing Shahrukh’s brand association that it’s the performance that wins over fame. Every company needs a performance-based endorser rather than just a credible person holding its product and taking about it. Today’s consumer base is not a bunch fools, they understand the brand and it’s communication, something, on which the experts are concentrating.
This sport has surely given birth to a lot of activities around us.  Hope the momentum goes forever and we accomplish many such milestones.
